The most common issues we run into are under-insulated ducts and boots not sealed to the drywall or floor.
R4.2 ductwork is never allowed in vented attics or in uninsulated basements.
Ducts must be sealed to the finished surface before the registers are installed.
Ductwork requirements:
- Ductwork connections, seams, and connections need to be sealed with either a UL-181 rated foil tape or applied mastic.
- Connections to all drywall and floor penetrations need to be sealed to their respective openings.
- A minimum of R-6 rated insulation is required in unconditioned or uninsulated basements and crawlspaces.
- A minimum of R-8 rated insulation is required on ductwork in exposed attics.
