Solar and Electric Vehicle Ready Requirements for NYStretch Code.

Both items are currently required in Town of Southampton and Town of East Hampton

Solar Ready

WHAT IS SOLAR READY?

The idea is to have an available roof surface free of obstructions where solar panels can be installed at a later date without any major modifications. You are not required to install panels or wiring, you just need to ensure that an adequate area is available.

  1. A Solar-ready zone in detached one family dwellings greater than 1400 square feet and with at least 600 square feet of roof area oriented between 90 degrees and 270 degrees of true north.
  2. Solar-ready zones shall be free from obstructions, including but not limited to vents, chimneys, and roof-mounted equipment.
  3. Construction documents must indicate the solar-ready zone.
  4. The solar-ready zone shall be set back from any permanently affixed object on the building or site.
  5. A capped roof penetration sleeve shall be provided adjacent to a solar-ready zone. Having an inside diameter of not less than 1-1/4 inches.
  6. A permanent certificate, indicating the solar-ready zone and other requirements of this section, shall be posted near the electrical distribution panel, water heater or other conspicuous location by the builder or registered design professional.

Electric Vehicle Ready

  • The building site shall provide a 208/240V 40-amp outlet or panel capacity and conduit for the further installation of such an outlet.
  • Outlet or conduit termination shall be adjacent to the parking area.

The idea is to have a location available where a charging station can be installed without needing to open walls to run wire or
make modifications to the electrical panel. You are not required to provide the wire, outlet, and panel space but you must have
space in the panel for a double pole breaker and run a conduit from the panel to where the car would be parked.
